My name is Lord Downey
I’m not from the hood, I’m from the ghetto.
I was raised in North Preston, Nova Scotia, a place where growing up meant no running water,
using the bathroom outside, and boiling water just to bathe. From ages one to eight, we lived
poor but we didn’t feel poor. We respected every meal, every moment, and every person around us.
Love, church on Sundays, and family values were always present.
Like many kids, I looked up to my cousins. They looked up to their older cousins, the ones with
the fastest cars, the flashiest jewelry, and the street reputation. When we weren’t dreaming
about Bruce Lee movies or boxing glory, we were dreaming about money and status. The culture
celebrated pimps, hustlers, and gangsters even when no one explained the long-term cost.
I had a strong, loving family. What I didn’t have were mentors who could show me how to channel
ambition into legitimate business, real ownership, and respectful hustles.
When my mother and I moved to Ontario, I quickly learned that the Downey name carried weight.
People already had expectations. I felt pressure to live up to a reputation I didn’t fully
understand yet.
In Ottawa, I did well in school. I excelled in sports. But the narrative around me never changed
— that Scotians were masters of pimping and drug dealing. That noise followed me everywhere, and
eventually, I made choices that took me off course.

But what matters most is what came next.
Today, my mission is simple:
Do for my community what wasn’t done for me.
I’ve rebuilt my life through legal entrepreneurship and creativity.
I learned the hard way and now I teach the smart way.
