I’ve seen young boys—7, 8 years old—sitting on the floor playing with their toys, while in the same room their older cousins and uncles are talking about women like they’re nothing. Laughing, bragging about using them, controlling them, making money off them. To a grown person, you might brush that off as “just talk,” but to a child… that becomes education.
That’s how it starts.
When you grow up around that, it doesn’t feel wrong—it feels normal. It shapes how young men see women, how they define power, and what they think success looks like before they even have a chance to think for themselves.
Then later, when those same young men get caught up in the streets or the sex trade, the system steps in.
And yeah, the courts might say they consider background and upbringing—but too often, what we see is young men getting heavy sentences without anyone really addressing the environment that helped shape their mindset in the first place. The focus is on punishment after the fact, not the conditioning that came before it.
That’s why I do what I do at the Downey Support Hub.
We’re trying to reach our young brothers before they get pulled into that life. We offer mentorship, real opportunities, and ways to make money that don’t put your freedom on the line. There are ways to win out here without destroying yourself or someone else.
And to our young women—your value is not in being used or controlled. We’re building spaces where women can come together, support each other, and build real businesses the right way, on your own terms.
